Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the right to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
