What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting
A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as âvivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help peopleâ.
âHow can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?â a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. âHe moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,â she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
âThis cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,â the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Childrenâs Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an âabsolute bloodbath,â but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a âmiracleâ he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard âdozens and dozensâ of gunshots.
âInitially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but itâs gone into my own skin and into my leg,â he said. âI was hit. They bandaged me up. Iâm ok.â
