The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
