The British driver Lando Norris Wins First Formula One World Championship in Yas Marina In Spite Of Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.
In a display of gutsy racing, Lando Norris has clinched his debut F1 world title by achieving a podium finish at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was all that was required for the 26-year-old driver, despite the fact that his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.
He delivered exactly what was needed in an enormously intense contest at the Abu Dhabi track, including a number of audacious overtakes, with flawless execution from both the driver and his team.
An Important Accomplishment for British Motorsport and The Team
By winning his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh British driver to achieve this. It concludes the team's title wait, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the driversâ and constructorsâ double back in 1998.
This marks a remarkable resurgence for the Woking-based outfit, from a low point in the middle of the last decade when they ended up ninth in the standings. The revival has been led by team principal Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an well-drilled team with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two Teammates
Regarding the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for much of the campaign, there was clear frustration at faltering in the later races. Several of poor performances and mistakes, including a crash in Baku, proved costly. However, he finishes the season having demonstrated he is also of champion caliber. Being so fast in only his third year in F1, with seven wins, remains a huge achievement.
Max Verstappen too had been brilliant to force the fight to the wire. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a significant deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having enough to overhaul Norris, ending up just a handful of points behind.
Sealing the Deal with Clinical Execution
He secured his success with ruthless precision to take the crown that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the previous two races. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.
It was a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh year in F1, all of them with McLaren. He stuck with the team even during some difficult periods, convinced they would return to the top. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.
He has done a hugely impressive job to stick at his goal, keeping his cool and confidence even when under the cosh. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at maximising what he could.

The Title-Deciding Race
In the race, Verstappen kept his lead through turn one, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to pass the outside of Norris to claim second place.
It showed the McLarens were allowed to fight, but left Norris under threat from Ferrariâs Charles Leclerc. Early pit stops saw Norris come out into midfield traffic, but he overtook rivals quickly and displayed no signs of nerves in his driving.
On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars in one swoop, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a dramatic assault where Norris burst up the inside line, almost completely off the track.
The incident was looked at by the stewards, with several nerve-wracking laps passing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This decisive charge without being held up was vital to his championship bid.
Diverging Fates
While Norris was crowned the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.
Making his debut with the Scuderia had been greeted with enthusiasm but produced what was comfortably his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will aim to reset over the off-season.
