Over two thousand Victimized Young People and Solo Child Refugee Applicants Lost from UK Local Authorities’ Custody

Based on freedom of information figures, in excess of 2,000 minors who were either exploited or arrived in the UK by themselves to claim asylum went missing from local authority custody last year.

Analysis Discloses Disturbing Figures

An analysis titled “Until the Danger Ceases” sent FoI requests to youth protection agencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Data from one hundred thirty-five municipal councils indicated that out of 2,335 minors categorized as having been victimized or believed to be trafficking victims, 864 (37%) were reported missing.

Overall one hundred forty-one government bodies answered inquiries about lone child asylum seekers in their care, who amounted to eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine children. Of these, one thousand five hundred one (13%) were recorded as vanished.

Serious Threat for Endangered Young People

The study, issued by charities, warns that these groups are at “extremely elevated danger” of disappearing from care.

Some victimized young people in the UK are local residents while others are from abroad.

They are likely to have been subjected to either predatory misuse or criminal exploitation, for example by county lines gangs.

Structural Shortcomings in Care

Local authorities have a mandatory responsibility to secure and help trafficked and unaccompanied children under youth safety systems. Nevertheless, there is no released national authorities data on the issue.

The latest analysis alerts that elements such as uncertain legal status can increase young people’s susceptibility to continued risk, placing them at significant risk of re-victimization and renewed exploitation.

Calls for Action

The report states there is a “persistent and serious deficiency” in protection and appeals to municipal councils and law enforcement to guarantee compliance with proper procedures.

The analysts also urge the Department for Education to make certain all victimized and solo young people can receive suitable housing that prevents being re-victimized.

Accommodation Issues

Since late 2021, government bodies have been mandated to make certain that all wards of the state under sixteen are placed in arrangements that provide care.

Nevertheless, teenagers aged 16 and 17 can still be placed in so-called “supervised lodging” that does not provide day-to-day care.

Under special conditions, these teenagers can be located in hostels, caravans, camping structures, watercraft, or communal living with non-family members.

Professional Comments

“This analysis underscores the threat trafficked and unaccompanied children face. It continues to be difficult to understand why these children continue to be failed. They are consistently let down by the frameworks meant to assist them, whilst being penalized by policies that exacerbate the problem.”
“All young people deserves to feel shielded and cared for, yet victimized and solo young people are consistently let down by the very structures designed to protect them.”

Government Response

A government spokesperson stated: “The current administration took over a minor protection structure not meeting the demands of the state’s most endangered young people.

“Our significant children’s wellbeing and schools bill is the biggest overhaul of minor protection in a generation, implementing our objective to sever the connection between young people’s circumstances and their future success.”

The official continued that the measures include bettering the supply of supervised accommodation, enhanced data exchange, obligating the formation of interdisciplinary youth safety groups in every area, and introducing a new responsibility on associates to routinely incorporate education and childcare settings in their protection systems to help stop children falling through the cracks.
