Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
