A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block in the background assisted us locate the video.
We are checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the images were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
