Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their release of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to defend and defend this national charter," the officials declared in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader released a combined announcement condemning the statements.
"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our nation with great loyalty and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical online messages and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration added.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The officials who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as former service members and defense specialists who care for this country and made an vow to safeguard and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the president views it punishable by death for us to repeat the law," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "Every American must join forces and censure the president's calls for our murder and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress advising troops to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also reportedly stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the representative said. "There are active officials of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our military relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can result in casualties, it can result in chaos, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
