An Historic Milestone when Liam Rosenior Transcends Obstacles

"Rosenior represents a top coach who knows the game intimately, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, in my role as the Blues' first African heritage footballer, I would be lying to claim this appointment fails to move me."

Those are the words expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club hired RC Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, as their next head coach following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also owns the London club.

Statistics show a mere twelve black head coaches – excluding individuals holding interim roles – in the Premier League since its inception 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he grew up and played locally, he understands the local fans," continued Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters see someone like Liam managing the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for equality… that's impactful and shows them the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents a huge step for the club, for the capital, for every young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Do the Numbers Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's first African heritage manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other present top flight boss of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers across the English game is matched by a lack of representation in the boardroom.

As per a BFP 2023's study, 43% of Premier League players are from black heritage.

Yet, research from Kick It Out revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching level, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – including senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as a the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of talent that exists in the black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches desire a chance to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to continue to striving to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent English head coaches presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind the continent's other big five divisions in terms of national representation.

16 out of twenty top-flight coaches in Serie A are Italian, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, Twelve of the 18 in Germany while 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, to some degree no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's really motivating to young English coaches in the system to see someone get such a role with his background and we hope he will be really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a brief spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered to tackling discrimination within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he followed his father's footsteps. He began penning articles for The Guardian, where in 2017 he addressed the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine ability arguing that roles should be given on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: how vast under-representation results in misunderstandings regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, he explained how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" or "passionate", but said he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him with a move from France to West London in July.

In further Guardian columns, he also confessed he was "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the top flight's first black manager with Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
