American Navy Commander to Inform Congress as Cross-Party Examination Grows Over Vessel Attack

A senior US Navy officer is set to provide a classified briefing to lawmakers monitoring the armed forces this Thursday, as they probe a US strike on a boat in the Caribbean waters. The incident, which reportedly targeted a boat transporting drugs, reportedly included a follow-up engagement that killed any remaining individuals.

White House Defends Actions as Defensive Measures

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on Monday asserted that the follow-on engagement was conducted “as a defensive action” and in accordance with regulations governing armed conflict. Cross-party examination has mounted over a report that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth gave a verbal order in September to attack the boat.

Democrats have argued the allegations, first reported recently, could amount to a violation of international law, and GOP members have also expressed their concerns about the legality of the strike on September 2nd. The House and Senate military oversight panels have initiated inquiries into the recent US military strikes on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific waters.

“Secretary Hegseth authorised the naval commander to execute these kinetic strikes,” said Leavitt. “The commander acted well within his mandate and the legal framework, overseeing the engagement to ensure the vessel was destroyed and the danger to the United States of America was eliminated.”

In her remarks to the press, Leavitt did not dispute the report that there were individuals who survived after the first attack. Her justification came after ex-President Donald Trump a day earlier said he “would not have approved that – not a follow-up attack” when asked about the event.

Growing Legislative Concern and Internal Support

Monday evening, Hegseth posted: “The Admiral is an national hero, a true professional, and has my full and complete backing. I support him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2nd operation and all others since.”

A month following the engagement, Bradley was promoted from commander of JSOC to commander of US Special Operations Command.

Anxiety over the administration’s armed actions against alleged drug-smuggling vessels has been building in Congress, but details of this subsequent attack stunned many legislators from across the aisle and generated serious questions about the lawfulness of the operations and the overall strategy in the area, particularly toward Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro.

The lawmakers indicated they did not have confirmation whether the recent news story was accurate, and some Republicans were sceptical. Nevertheless, they stated the alleged attacking of survivors of an first missile strike presented grave issues and deserved further scrutiny.

Administration and Military Leaders Reiterate Position

The administration weighed in after the commander-in-chief on Sunday vigorously supported Hegseth. “Secretary Hegseth said he did not command the killing of those two men,” Trump stated. He added, “And I trust him.”

Leavitt said Hegseth had spoken with members of Congress who may have expressed some concerns about the allegations over the past few days.

Gen Dan Caine, the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, also spoke over the weekend with the bipartisan leaders leading the Senate and House military committees. He reiterated “his faith in the experienced commanders at every level”, Caine’s office said in a release.

The statement added that the conversation centered on “discussing the intent and lawfulness of operations to disrupt illegal smuggling rings which endanger the safety and stability of the western hemisphere”.

Legislative Leaders Respond and Promise Probe

The Senate majority leader, John Thune, on Monday broadly supported the missions, repeating the White House line that they were necessary to stop the flow of illicit drugs into the US.

Thune stated the panels in the legislature would investigate what occurred. “I don’t think you want to draw any conclusions or inferences until you have complete information,” he said of the September 2nd attack. “We’ll see where they point.”

After the report, Hegseth wrote on Friday that “fake news is producing more false, inflammatory, and disparaging reporting to discredit our remarkable service members working to protect the nation”.

“Our ongoing missions in the region are lawful under both US and global statutes, with every step in accordance with the law of armed conflict – and sanctioned by the best legal advisors, throughout the military hierarchy,” Hegseth stated.

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, called Hegseth a “disgrace” over his reaction to critics. Schumer demanded that Hegseth release the video of the attack and appear under penalty of perjury about what happened.

The GOP lawmaker for Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate military panel, vowed that his panel’s investigation would be “conducted thoroughly and by the book”.

“We’ll discover the ground truth,” he added, stating that the implications of the allegation were “serious charges”.

The September 2nd engagement was one in a series carried out by the American armed forces in the Caribbean and Pacific as Trump has directed the deployment of a naval group of naval vessels near the Venezuelan coast, including the biggest US carrier. More than eighty individuals were fatally wounded in the series of attacks.
