The 2026 Formula 1 cars are set to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious than this year.

The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the new terminology that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The championship is implementing what is arguably the largest regulation change in its long history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a substantially higher energy storage, requiring key advancements in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

During grand prix events, pilots will carefully oversee ERS energy – including during qualifying laps – to secure the peak result.

Wide-ranging research were undertaken with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terms would aid comprehension of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to render a set of intricate features of the sport as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in preference for intuitive labels that clearly indicate the primary purpose of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

The FIA states that racers will have greater control to choose strategies regarding power usage, regeneration, and conservation.

The new regulations introduce a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to aid the viewers' comprehension of the strategic duel.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a surge of additional ERS power accessible when a driver is less than a second the vehicle in front to assist with an overtake.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual power boost from the hybrid system that can be utilized during offensive or defensive moves. It provides the pilot full engine and battery energy at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

  • Active Aero: Both the front and rear wings change configuration – spreading on the high-speed sections for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and closing in the bends for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: The system can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only limited engine output is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The 2026 cars will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although teams will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Aerodynamic drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will adjust on the straight sections to improve speed and boost top speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will retain 18-inch rims, but the tyres themselves will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

2026 Engine Regulations

The new power units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the ERS, increasing from about 20% electrical this year.

The hybrid system is streamlined through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey component that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

Cars will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or synthetic production methods.
