A Account of Unexpected Generosity: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for a medical school interview. I assumed to book a place to stay after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
Hailing from Singapore, I considered the possibility of just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. Not knowing quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on public transport and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, thinking it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more people who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed lost as a woman spotted me wandering around the city and asked if everything was alright. I shared my predicament and immediately she suggested I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: a leftover sandwiches she had from her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location and safe to spend the night.
With hindsight, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish the universe has returned her generosity tenfold. The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
